How Foot Joints Can Be Affected by Ankle Arthritis

One of the most painful forms of arthritis is ankle arthritis. There are 28 bones in the human foot with about 30 joints. If a person develops ankle arthritis in their foot then this can prove to be extremely painful as each step they take will cause tremendous pain. The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis which is a degenerative condition that will eventually wear down cartilage in the joints. When the bones in the joint scrape together without cartilage, this is what causes the pain, not to mention probably bone damage too.

Whilst arthritis has the ability to affect any of the joints in the body, it most commonly affects the end of the shin bone. This is where the end of the shin bone rests on the top of the ankle bone. If a person suffers from ankle arthritis, when they walk, the entire weight of their body is placed on the ankle bone and this in turn wears the bone down and can become extremely painful. It's common for this type of arthritis to affect the heel bone as well as the middle bone or arch as well as the first joints of the toes. Unfortunately, as people walk their body weight rests on each of these joints and the result is that pain is inevitable regardless of where the arthritis is located.

Diagnosis is carried out through a bone scan to find out the extent of the damage to the cartilage alongside a gait analysis to diagnose ankle arthritis. An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or CT (Computerized Tomography) scan could also be utilised during the diagnostic phase.

Treatments You'll Likely Receive at The Onset of Ankle Arthritis

If you've been found to have ankle arthritis by your doctor, it's likely that you will be prescribed with some form of anti-inflammatory drug alongside some painkillers. It's also common for some doctors to advise extra support for your shoes in the form of ankle supports, arch supports or bridging supports - anything that can hep take the weight off the area causing you pain. In some cases, a completely custom-made shoe to help strengthen the joint may also be recommended to you.

It's also been known for some doctors to suggest a brace around the ankle. This will help prevent bones from raking together through lack of cartilage. A good exercise program may also be advised to patients who are suffering from obesity or are overweight. This is important because the less weight your body has to carry, the more chance it will have of reducing the amount of pain within joints as a result of less stress being applied to the affected areas. Some doctors could also use steroid injections to help create a short-term protective buffer around the joint.

In some cases, non-evasive treatments such as these simply have no effect on patients. If this is the case, arthroscopic surgery is likely to be the next step of treatment. This type of surgery allows doctors to remove unwanted fragments of bone from within areas that have suffered from reduced cartilage and have managed to work their way into what remains. Failing this type of surgery, one of the final steps used for severe ankle arthritis is to replace the affected joint with an artificial one. These artificial joints are usually made of plastic or metal.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Or Osteoarthritis - Which Do You Suffer From?

Everyone has heard of arthritis. But even among the millions of arthritis sufferers worldwide there is still a lot of confusion about the type of arthritis they suffer. For the majority of people it comes down to two types - rheumatoid arthritis, which is an inflammatory condition, and osteoarthritis, a "wear-and-tear" type of arthritis that mainly occurs as you get older.

We will look at rheumatoid arthritis in more detail first. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition that primarily affects the smaller joints in your body like your hands, wrists and feet. This arthritis disease is three times more common among woman than men and strikes around 1% of the U.S. population - which means that at any one time the lives of millions of people are been affected by this crippling disease. It can also get worse over time and eventually may affect other organs in the body as well.

The second most common type of arthritis is called osteoarthritis. As we explained earlier, osteoarthritis is a "wear-and-tear" type of arthritis that mainly affects the elderly. Osteoarthritis usually impacts upon the larger weight-bearing joints, such as the hips and knees. Another point of difference between rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can been seen in the duration of joint stiffness and pain.

When someone suffers from RA, the stiffness in their joints is worse after rest - such as first thing in the morning - and often lasts at least 30 minutes or more. In addition, RA has a tendency to affect the knuckles and the wrists, areas that are usually not affected by osteoarthritis. With osteoarthritis, however, joint stiffness tends to be quite brief and usually lasts only a few minutes.

Here are other ways to differentiate rheumatoid arthritis from osteoarthritis. All of the symptoms listed below are classic signs of rheumatoid arthritis and if you suffer from any of them then it is almost certain that you have some form of the disease:

• The joint is swollen or red which suggests that there is inflammation

• The joint symptom is associated with systemic features such as fever, general fatigue or body stiffness lasting more than 10 to 15 minutes

• Joints are affected on both sides, rather than one sided

A final diagnosis, however, needs to be made by your doctor. While there is no cure for RA at the moment, people suffering from the disease can have considerable control over it through their diet, lifestyle changes and physical therapy.

One form of treatment that has proven to be particularly effective against the joint inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis is omega-3 fatty supplements. Try to maintain a healthy weight, take adequate rest and eat a healthy diet consisting of omega-3 supplements in the form of fish oil supplements. If you are consistent, your arthritis will be more manageable and may even recede. Now that you understand the benefits of fish oil supplements, take a look at the products on my website that I use myself, along with other good tips and advice to fight arthritis.

Arthritis Treatment: What TNF Inhibitors Are There for Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common inflammatory form of arthritis. It is a systemic autoimmune driven process that affects more than 2 million Americans.

While disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDS) were our stalwarts through the 1980's and early 1990's, biologic drugs, specifically TNF inhibitors, have changed our whole way of looking at the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Using these drugs in combination with DMARDS, it has been possible to induce remission in many patients with RA.

TNF inhibitors block the effects of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a protein messenger that drives the autoimmune process that causes the destructive potential of RA.

There are five TNF inhibitors that have been approved by the FDA. The first is Enbrel. This is a fusion protein with a receptor that binds to circulating TNF in the blood. By acting like a sponge it reduces the signs and symptoms of RA. It is generally best when used in combination with methotrexate. The drug is given by subcutaneous injection weekly.

Humira is a totally human monoclonal antibody directed against TNF. It also appears to be more effective when used in combination with methotrexate. It is administered by subcutaneous injection every two weeks.

Remicade is a chimeric antibody, meaning it's part human and part mouse. It's directed against TNF and also works best when given along with methotrexate. It is the only TNF inhibitor which is administered by intravenous infusion. Remicade can be given as often as every four to eight weeks.

Cimzia is a PEGylated TNF inhibitor. The pegylation keeps the drug around longer in the synovial tissue (joint lining). It's also given by subcutaneous injection once every two weeks.

Simponi is a human monoclonal antibody directed against TNF. It is given as a subcutaneous injection once a month.

Generally if a patient hasn't responded within twelve weeks, they are probably not going to respond. Also, some people respond initially but then begin to lose their response.

Patients who don't respond to one TNF inhibitor can be tried on another since some people respond to one and not the other.

There are many potential side effects that must be considered in patients treated with TNF inhibitors.

These include increased susceptibility to various infections, neurologic disorders, possible increased susceptibility to certain malignancies such as lymphoma, and many others. A much more in-depth discussion of potential risk factors is available on each manufacturer's website. Close observation and monitoring of patients taking these potent medicines is mandatory.

Arthritis

Apart from the HIV, arthritis is one of the deadly diseases in the world. This is the disease that has claimed many lives in the United States and elsewhere. Millions of dollars have been spent in combating this deadly disease, but still no permanent solution. If you or a loved one have this disease, you need to be aware that it is not the end of the world yet.

Many people like you having the same problem have been able to continue living their normal lives, while battling with this disease. It is a disease that you can recover from if detected early enough. An early treatment will prolong your life or that of your loved one.

Arthritis is a disease that is common in joints. Arthritis as a term derives its meaning from the Greek word "arthron" and "itis". The former means joint while the latter means inflammation. It is not just a single disease but a combination of several other diseases that affect your joints.

Actually, it combines different diseases. Some of these various diseases associated with arthritis involve inflammation of the joint, while others do not. Some of these different diseases are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, pseudo-gout, ankylosing spondylitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, psoriatic arthritis, etc.

Though presently there is no known cure for this disease, researches are still being carried out in order to find a cure. It is advisable that you contact a reputable and reliable physician for treating arthritis.

These professionals are more experienced than you. Their timely advice can help elongate your life or that of your loved one battling with arthritis. Though many people out there are scared of visiting a physician, it is advisable that you do so; as it might be the saving grace.

You must watch out for the arthritis symptoms early enough to know when to begin receiving treatment for arthritis. As soon as you detect any early symptoms of arthritis, it is recommended that you seek immediate help and assistance of a professional rheumatologist who will be in the best position to help you with the needed treatment.

Arthritis might not be far away from you if:

- you are having persistent pain in your joints

- there is swelling in one or more of your joints

- you have persistent low back pain

Arthritis is a disease that is most common with women. This is not to say that the men folks are exempted but the rate among women is more than that of the men.

Also, it has been discovered to be prevalent among older people.

However, there are other types of arthritis that affects the younger ones as well.

In other words, no age range is spared by arthritis.

As mentioned earlier, there is presently no known cure for this deadly disease.

You are therefore advised to seek urgent medical attention when you discover that you or your loved one is experiencing any symptoms of arthritis.

Failure to Diagnose Septic Arthritis, What Should I Do?

Septic arthritis, also sometimes referred to as bacterial arthritis, reactive arthritis, along with several other clinical names, is a type of infection that affects the joint spaces of the body. The infection can be caused by a number of different types of microorganisms, such as bacteria. The most common culprit is the bacteria known as staphylococcus aureus. Of all the joints in the body, the knee joint is the one that is most commonly affected by this type of infection.

There are a number of different ways that organisms can enter the joints, including by means of a consequence from a surgical incision. It is estimated that twenty thousand cases result in the United States every year.

There are three main symptoms of septic arthritis that patients should be aware of. These include: a spike in temperature above one hundred and one degree Fahrenheit, joint swelling, and sharp pain in the joint especially in the days immediately following surgery.

The issue of septic arthritis is most definitely an emergency medical condition that needs to be addressed immediately. Without prompt medical attention, including a proper diagnosis (and in some cases even with prompt medical attention), the infection can become so severe that it damages the articular cartilage and can lead to infections of the blood. When this happens serious injuries and even death can occur.

As soon as septic arthritis is suspected or symptoms are present, the surgeon should arrange to perform an arthrocentesis. This is a type of procedure that removes fluid from the space in the joint. The fluid is then sent to a laboratory so that a culture can be performed. Since joint infections can spread quickly and become so serious, antibiotics are often administered before the culture results are returned. If there is an infection found, the fluid should be drained by means of an incision and all infected tissue should be removed.

As previously mentioned, septic arthritis usually causes severe discomfort in the affected joint, swelling and fever. Other symptoms of note include: poor appetite, tachycardia (otherwise known as a rapid heartbeat), warmth to the area that has been affected, irritability, and malaise.

If you are currently taking other medications to help control arthritis pain and discomfort, the severe pain associated with septic arthritis may not be felt as much because medication often masks the pain as well as the elevated body temperature.

Adults most commonly find their knees are the most affected by the condition of septic arthritis, and in some cases the joints of the arms as well. Children are most often affected in the area of their hips. Septic arthritis in the hip region can cause children to have to hold their hips in a fixed position in order to avoid any type of movement, which causes pain.

More rare cases of septic arthritis can affect the neck, back, and head.

It is critical that treatment for septic arthritis be prompt and make use of the proper antibiotics as well as drainage of the fluid from the joints. This combination often is enough to resolve the infection. That being said, if treatment is put off for any reason, the infection can spread which can cause permanent joint damage and degeneration.

In addition to joint damage and degeneration, other complications of septic arthritis include joint deformity and osteoarthritis. There are even cases that require the joint to be completely reconstructed surgically. In the event that the infection impacts a prosthetic joint, it may be necessary to replace that prosthetic joint.

To help make a definitive and correct septic arthritis diagnosis, a joint fluid analysis (as discussed above) needs to be completed. This will provide medical staff with the information needed to determine the exact bacterium that is causing the infection so that proper treatment can be administered. The fluid around your joints, also known as synovial fluid, typically appears thick and clear. When bacteria have affected this fluid, the color, volume, makeup, and consistency of the synovial fluid will change. In addition to fluid tests, blood tests should also be ordered. This is done to help medical professionals determine if bacteria have made their way to the blood stream. Furthermore, imaging tests are also commonly used. Tests such as x-rays or other forms of imaging are done to determine the extent of damage that may have been done to the joint.

Any time you or someone you know has been injured following a surgical procedure, such as is the case with septic arthritis, it is important that you contact a personal injury attorney as soon as possible. These types of injuries can be avoided, and they should be avoided at all costs. In the event that a complication such as septic arthritis does occur, it is important that the proper medical attention be given in a timely manner. Delaying treatment for any reason, or making an incorrect diagnosis, is another type of medical negligence or malpractice. If this happens, you also need to contact a personal injury attorney promptly to help protect your legal rights.

Personal injury attorneys who specialize in the area of medical negligence and malpractice know the ins and outs of this area of the law extremely well. He or she will work hard to seek the compensation you deserve, and help you to cover past, present, and future medical bills. Compensation can also be obtained for loss of income, loss of use, and pain and suffering. In some cases, punitive damages may also be sought in order to punish those who caused the initial harm.

These cases can be quite complex in nature and should not be handled on your own; professional legal assistance provides your best bet for a positive outcome. Since personal injury attorneys do not typically require any type of payment upfront, you will not have to worry about funding your claim as it progresses through the legal system. This can provide a great deal of comfort, and allow you to focus on your personal health and recovery.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Types

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a genetic disorder that may be recessive or dominant depending on the type of EDS you have. That means if you have a dominant type and have children, those children have a 50% chance of inheriting the disease. If you have a recessive type, each child has a 25% chance of inheriting the disease and a 50% chance of being a carrier of that disease. It is for this reason that many EDS sufferers consult with a genetic counselor, someone who can assess the risks of genetic disorders to you and your children, prior to having children. This is the only way to prevent the disease.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is classified into six major types or groups. It was originally divided into 11 different types, but scientists reclassified them based on signs and symptoms in 1997. This reclassification gave us the current six major types; hypermobility type, classical type, vascular type, kyphoscoliosis type, arthrochalasia type and dermatosparaxis type. There is a final grouping, other types, that is a catch-all group for the extremely rare cases that have only been seen in a handful of patients, usually all in the same family. All of the types affect your joints and many also affect your skin.

The hypermobility type is mainly characterized by loose, unstable joints and chronic joint pain. The loose joints increase the sufferer's risk of dislocating or straining the joint. Specific exercises to strengthen the muscles surrounding the joints will decrease the risk of dislocation and/or straining. You may find relief from the joint pain with over the counter pain medications. Your skin will be affected, but to what degree is uncertain. Hypermobility EDS is the most common type of EDS, affecting one in 10,000 to 15,000 people.

Classical EDS is the second most common type of EDS. It affects one in 20,000 to 40,000 people. The main symptoms with this type of EDS are very elastic skin that feels like velvet, bruises easily and is slow to heal wounds. Some sufferers also experience noncancerous skin growths on major pressure points (knees and elbows), shins and forearms. The joints are affected with this type, but not to the same degree as hypermobility EDS. They are prone to dislocation and may affect the large motor skill development in infants.

Vascular EDS is the most serious type of EDS because it primarily affects the blood vessels, making them very fragile and prone to tearing. Luckily, it is also one of the rarer forms, affecting only one in 100,000 to 200,000 people. This form also has elastic skin and loose joints, mainly the small joints of the fingers and toes. Sufferers of this type of EDS may also have very thin skin, making their veins very prominent.

The final three types, kyphoscoliosis, arthrochalasia and dermatosparaxis, are very rare. Only about 60 cases of kyphoscoliosis EDS have been reported worldwide. The main symptoms of this type of EDS are curving of the spine (scoliosis), eye problems including fragility and progressive muscle weakness. Arthrochalasia EDS is also rare; only 30 or so cases have been reported worldwide. This EDS is characterized by very loose joints, including the hips, which may affect the development of large motor skills such as walking. Sufferers of this type also have elastic skin that bruises easily, an earlier onset of arthritis and an increased risk of bone fractures and loss. The dermatosparaxis type of EDS is the rarest of the three, only about 10 cases have been reported worldwide. The primary symptom of this type is extremely loose and sagging skin. The joints are also affected, however, and may delay large motor skill development in children.

The final grouping, Others, is a catch-all grouping for the extremely rare and not well documented cases of EDS. The types here have a variety of symptoms, ranging from fragile skin without bruising or loose joints to chronic diarrhea and low blood pressure. If you suspect you have any of the types of EDS, you need to see your doctor right away.

Oregano Oil - A Great Remedy For Arthritis

Arthritis is a chronic condition that is characterized by the inflammation of the joint usually accompanied with pain and loss of mobility. It is the most common musculoskeletal disease in the world and it mostly affects those who are 55 years old and above. There are many types of arthritis but the most common are rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and gouty arthritis.

This condition is usually treated by following a controlled diet, application of special medications and specific joint exercises or physical therapy. The typical medication give to arthritis sufferers are NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve the pain. They can be injected directly to the joint to obtain temporary pain relief. There are different forms of therapy used to increase the flexibility of the joints and muscles. These include hydrotherapy, relaxation therapy and mobilization therapy. It is commonly believed that this condition is incurable therefore these medical interventions aim only to reduce the effects of the condition but not to totally cure it.

However, there is an organic substance which was found to have longer positive effects when tested with patients who have arthritis. This is oregano oil, sourced from the Mediterranean wild oregano plant Origanum vulgare.

In the past centuries, this wild plant was used by the ancient Greeks for treating their common maladies such as skin diseases, respiratory ailments and digestive problems. Modern science has found that the essential oil taken from the leaves of this plant contains many beneficial substances that make it effective as an antimicrobial agent. It has plenty of phytochemicals, phenols and flavonoids, chief of which are carvacrol and thymol. There are also significant amounts of minerals, vitamins and important trace elements. No wonder, it is now being used in alternative medicine as an anti fungal, anti parasitic, anti bacterial and anti viral agent.

It is the carvacrol content of oregano oil that makes it effective for arthritis treatment. Scientists have found that this particular agent has effective anti inflammatory properties. In addition, it is also an effective substance that can reduce pain. This is perfect for arthritic patients since these are the two most serious conditions that they suffer. One of the studies has found that its pain relieving capability can be compared to morphine.

In this regard, oregano oil is one of the best treatments for arthritis for the simple reason that it is the best source of carvacrol. The true Mediterranean oregano oil has about 60% to 80% of carvacrol.
