Arthritis sufferers today are still continually seeking relief from their arthritis pain. I found relief from my arthritis pain, naturally, and you can do it too. In osteoarthritis, any one or more affected joints experience a progressive loss of cartilage, which is the slippery material that cushions the ends of bones.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease of the joint cartilage and bone, often thought to result from "wear and tear" on a joint, although there are other causes of arthritis such as congenital defects, trauma and metabolic disorders. An inflammatory response causes cytokines, to gather in injured areas and cause inflammation and damage to body tissue and cells; it's known to play a role in rheumatoid arthritis and other muscle and joint problems associated with autoimmune diseases. It's generally thought that inflammation plays a minor role in osteoarthritis and is more likely to be a result, not a cause, of arthritis.

I eat a diet of living foods (fruits, raw veggies, raw nuts and raw seeds) to relieve my arthritis pain and this should be tried for at least 30 days, thus eliminating any foods that might be culprits. Make smoothies with fruit only using a base of two bananas, adding a cup of frozen or fresh blueberries and mango chunks or substitute any other fruit and add an energy boost of two tablespoons of coconut oil; add one or two leaves of kale for another highly nutritional boost -- no one will ever know.

Keep in mind, if you take a joint supplement it should help do three things -- build cartilage, relieve everyday joint pain, and enhance your flexibility and movement. Some of the supplements commonly used for relieving arthritis pain, but I don't know if any of these work, are: glucosamine, chondroitin, bromelain, grapeseed extract, omega-3 and omega-6, cod liver oil, manganese ascorbate, MSM, boron, niacinamide, pantothenic acid, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

One natural approach is to consume foods that are known to help relieve arthritis pain or prevent arthritis. Try avoiding the eight most allergic foods, wheat being the most allergenic; they are wheat, corn, eggs, milk, peanuts, fish, shellfish and some nuts, not all. Dried Montmorency tart cherries seem to be helpful for arthritis pain also.

The first step in managing your arthritis is to change your diet; I think all experts would agree on this. Many arthritis sufferers have changed their diets and noticed significant or total improvement.

Try to keep painful joint areas in motion, even in a limited manner. Exercise your affected joints every day, to keep them flexible. Use Taiji health balls, with the chimes, to strengthen the finger joints: hold two balls, move in a clockwise circle with your fingers to rotate them, then try counterclockwise and do throughout the day. At bedtime you can try putting on a pair of stretch gloves to help reduce the pain and swelling in your fingers for those with arthritic hands.

Even the lightest exercise can go a long way to maintaining your joint mobility and overall health. Exercise is good for joints affected by osteoarthritis. Whatever you do, keep moving; don't sit when you can stand, don't stand when you can walk.

If you're going to go the conventional treatment route and take medications, ask your pharmacist for drug inserts so you can read up on the drugs and understand any side effects or adverse reactions, before taking them. At the very least, understand what the side effects and adverse reactions are for any drug you take. Conventional doctors may suggest the standard protocol for your joint pain; they tell you to take over-the-counter NSAIDS or prescribe COX-2 inhibitors, of which all have side effects.

Can Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Cause Arthritis?


With Carpal Tunnel and Wrist Tendonitis being such a prevalent issue that involves various pains and symptoms in the wrist area, one can start to wonder if there is any connection to the development, onset, and progression of Arthritis.

The dynamic that causes Carpal Tunnel Symptoms can  cause Arthritis.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can cause Arthritis.

How does it do that? First we must look at the Carpal Tunnel Dynamic.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the end result of an ever increasing Pain Causing Dynamic.

We use our hands on a daily basis, and every time we contract a muscle, that muscle retains a tiny bit of that contraction. So we slowly get tighter and tighter. And we stay tighter and tighter, even when we sleep. This has our structures get less and less circulation, less new blood and nutrition in, and less waste product out. This becomes an irritation.

Also, or connective tissue starts to slowly shrink wrap, compressing our structures into an increasingly immobile state. Out body compensates as long as it can, but eventually starts to lose the battle, and that's when we start to feel pain. The factor we need to pay attention to in a context of getting or avoiding Arthritis, is the part of the dynamic where muscles get tight, and stay tight.

When a muscle is tight, the tendons that connect muscle to bone get pulled on. So whatever the tendon connects to gets pulled on.  So if your forearm muscles connect to the forearm, and the hand. If your forearm muscles are tight, they pull your hand bones into your forearm bones. This compresses your wrist joint(s).

Because muscles get tight and stay tight, even when you sleep your wrist and/or your finger joints are getting compressed. When you are using your hands during the day, every time you move your hands and fingers, those joints grind on each other.

The tighter your muscles, the more pressure the bones grind on each other with.

Ideally joints glide smoothly. If the bones are compressed, then they are grinding instead of gliding. This irritates and eventually causes wear and tear damage to the inside lining of the joint. This leads to Arthritis.

Having said that, once arthritis sets into the joint, you may or may not be able to heal. But it's safe to say, if you don't loosen the muscles and connective tissue and turn off the Inflammation process, it will continue to get worse. And even if it's not possible to heal the damage that's already there (I believe that it is), you can greatly reduce your Arthritis pain and symptoms. 

Arthritis: Foods to Stay Away From


Having arthritis can become worse if a treatment for this disease has never been able to cure you. And this problem will be able to be resolved if you live a healthy lifestyle. Incorporate exercise, balanced diet, and lots of vitamins and supplements such as a green lipped mussel extract into your system. And speaking about diet, there are some foods which you should stay away from or reduce your intake of them if you want to get rid of the pain that arthritis causes in joints and other parts of your body.

Eating the right food can be a very good arthritis treatment and prevention at the same time. It is also one way for you to have a lifestyle which can make your whole body healthy and well. The foods that you should stay away from also vary to each and every person. Some people will be able to lessen the arthritis pain that they feel if they cut-off on dairy products, others will not feel any pain anymore if they will eliminate the use of vegetable oil if they are frying their foods, and to others' cases, they just control their intake of saturated products.

Knee Pain From Osteoarthritis - Can Your Hip Be the Cause?


Osteoarthritis is a very common disease that can greatly affect our mobility and quality of life. Osteoarthritis is commonly found in the weight-bearing joints of the body. The knees, hips, lower back, and neck.

It usually starts off gradually and most people continue on until it reaches the stage that medical advice is required. If you are complaining of knee pain, you doctor should also question you on your lower back and hips and assess these joints.

Referred pain is when the sensation of pain is felt in an area other than the location in which it is caused. An Overview Of Rheumatoid Arthritis And Pregnancy


Rheumatoid arthritis refers to swollen and painful joints, a condition most commonly found among women and elderly. Strangely, pregnancy and rheumatoid Arthritis are closely and interestingly related to each other. Right from conception, pregnancy brings remarkable changes to the immune system, and these change contribute to changes in the symptoms most commonly associated with this disease.

Different people have different experiences and observations regarding pregnancy and rheumatoid arthritis. In some cases, pregnancy brings a temporary relief while others experience flares. About 75% women report relief in pain and swelling during pregnancy. Reduction in the severity of symptoms is usually observed after the first trimester. This may be due to certain hormonal changes during the second trimester.

It is also believed that the immune system gets a bit weak during pregnancy. This is done to accept the fetus as part of the body. This response calms the rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Remission continues throughout pregnancy, and the symptoms relapse just after the delivery. In the other case, muscular spasms and general body weakness may aggravate RA symptoms. Swelling, backaches and tiredness are supposed to be associated with pregnancy, instead of rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis patients have to face problems in vaginal delivery as well. The hip and back bone does not grow, thus leading towards caesarean deliveries.

When it comes to medicines, the relationship between pregnancy and RA gets a bit serious. Some medicines typically used to treat RA, such as Methotrexate and Leflunomide, are strictly prohibited during pregnancy. These drugs may cause abortion or birth defects. Only some specific drugs, rated harmless by FDA, can be taken during pregnancy.

Certain drugs such as Sulphasalazine and anti-TNF agents can be safely used to control RA during pregnancy. They pose no danger to mother or the baby, making them a popular choice for sufferers of the disease. Patients need to be careful during breastfeeding. Some drugs that calms down immune response, are not allowed during this period. Drugs like NSAIDs and Prednisone can be taken according to the prescribed dose.

A healthy diet is the best way to control RA during pregnancy. A sensible diet may reduce the chance and intensity of relapse. So it is important to take care of your movement and activities. Moreover, it is very important to control body weight after pregnancy; otherwise the weight-bearing joints may badly swell up. In short, except the serious kind of arthritis, such as arthritis of ribs and hips, Rheumatoid arthritis has no serious impact on normal pregnancy and delivery.

Deadly Psoriasis Remedy


When everything else fails, the person plagued with psoriasis can turn to methotrexate. This drug, which can be taken either by mouth or by intramuscular injection, was initially used to treat certain cancers in the late 1940s.

Low doses of methotrexate were later found to be effective for other diseases as well. Since the early 1960s, it has been prescribed for severe and/or disabling psoriasis.

"Methotrexate is a drug that is used in low doses to treat the lesions of severe psoriasis that have not been responsive to conventional therapy. It is also used to treat psoriatic arthritis. It can restore function to those emotionally or physically disabled by psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis," according to the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) in Portland, Oregon.

The people who respond well to methotrexate are those suffering from extensive psoriasis involving at least 30 percent of their skin or those with acute pustular psoriasis which is characterized by deep seated lesions on the palms and soles surrounded by red patches.

Severe psoriatic arthritis, a crippling form of the disease marked by inflammation and stiffness in the joints, is another indication for methotrexate therapy.

This drug can be taken in three ways: as a single, weekly oral dose of three to 10 tablets ranging from seven to 20 milligrams; a weekly divided oral dose of three 2.5 to five milligram tablets over a 36-hour period; or a weekly intramuscular dose.

Improvement of symptoms can be seen in four to six weeks but may take as long as two to three months of starting methotrexate therapy. Once the lesions have cleared, the patient remains free of symptoms for a few weeks to a year after stopping therapy.

However, methotrexate is an extremely toxic drug even in small doses - the reason the patient should be closely monitored by a physician. Short-term side effects include nausea, insomnia, loss of appetite, fatigue, hair loss, and a reduction in white blood cell count which can make one susceptible to infection.

Other less common side effects which should be reported to a doctor are unusual sensitivity to the sun, acne, headache, drowsiness, fever, blurred vision, painful urination, reduced sperm count, convulsions, ringing in the ears, bloody urine, and breathing problems.

"Methotrexate can trigger a unique and dangerous form of lung disease anytime during your course of therapy. This reaction can occur at doses as low as 7.5 milligrams a week. Symptoms of this condition are cough, respiratory infection, difficulty breathing, abnormal chest X-ray, and low blood concentration oxygen. Any change in your breathing or lung states while taking methotrexate should be reported to your doctor," warned Drs. Gilbert I. Simon and Harold M. Silverman in "The Pill Book." Is Humira an Effective Psoriasis Treatment?


Humira is a drug that has recently been approved for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. It is of a class of drugs called "biologics" that act on a portion of the immune system, blocking the immune system response and lessening the autoimmune disease or other immune disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Humira is somewhat related to Enbrel, a commonly used treatment in both rheumatic arthritis and psoriatic arthritis.

In a recent study on psoriasis patients, patients were given every other week injections of Humira for a total of 24 weeks (twelve to thirteen injections total). Of those given Humira, 42 percent of those with moderate to severe psoriasis had a ninety percent or better improvement in their psoriasis. About 65 percent of patients showed a 75 percent or greater reduction in the appearance of their psoriasis and in symptoms related to psoriasis. Almost all patients revealed that their experience of their quality of life was not affected by having psoriasis.

It is estimated that between 4 and 6 million patients in the US suffer from psoriasis, although most have mild to moderate plaque-type psoriasis involving the elbows and knees on the outer aspects. Milder cases are treated with coal tar preparations, Accutane or other retinoids, UVB and UVA light therapy, methotrexate, cyclosporine and topical corticosteroid creams. Each drug works to help psoriasis but most have some side effects that make it difficult to use over the long haul.

Biologics for psoriasis came along in 2003 and the drug called Amevive was the first to be used to treat severe psoriasis. More recently Raptiva came along with the same expectation that it help psoriasis victims with moderate to severe symptoms. Enbrel and Humira are also biologics approved for the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis. They work by targeting a specific protein known as TNF-alpha (tumor necrosis factor-alpha) which plays a big role in the inflammatory response that goes on to trigger psoriasis. Humira is just the latest of these amazing biologics that act on the problem at hand with fewer side effects from the other treatment modalities.

Humira and related drugs appear to control psoriasis for many weeks and months after stopping the therapy. This cuts down on the overall cost of therapy and the patient can be medication-free while having an improvement in their symptoms that lasts. Many patients find that Humira is the best medication for psoriasis that they have ever had.

In another study, patients received placebo or Humira at 40 mg injections every other week. After three months, the placebo patients were given Humira and both sets of patients completed a 6 month course. In the study, 64 percent of patients receiving the every-two-week injections reached a 75 percent improvement in the quality of their psoriasis and 40 percent of the patients receiving Humira stated that there was no impact of psoriasis on their life after 3-6 months of therapy. The side effects were practically nothing and the rest of their immune system appeared unaffected by having to take Humira. Only the psoriasis was improved and without major side effects.
