Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment

Rheumatoid arthritis treatment aims to accomplish several things:

-Reduce systemic inflammation
-Reduce symptom severity and duration
-Modification of the disease process
-Improve general health
-Send the disease into remission

While RA treatment should deal aggressively with the causes of the disease and seek to treat them first and foremost, the patient is certainly entitled to relief from the sometimes debilitating symptoms of RA.

RA Treatment of Symptoms

For mild to medium RA symptoms such as joint pain and stiffness, various supplements and over the counter medications can be used with good results. Both anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers can help treat rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

Non-steroid anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) such as naproxen and ibuprofen are quite effective for low-grade symptoms but their continued use is not advised as they have a number of potentially serious side-effects such as stomach bleeding.

Several other pain relievers are available both over the counter and by prescription such as opiodes (hydrocodone, oxycodone, etc.) for more serious pain.

RA Treatment via Surgery

The part of the joint that becomes inflamed by RA is the synovial membrane and surgery is sometimes indicated. The purpose of the surgery is to extract the inflamed synovial fluid which helps preserve the joints. The synovia has a discolored appearance which is indicative of inflammation and is sometimes used as a diagnostic tool to check for RA. This surgery is particularly useful when RA is still relatively undeveloped and has a success rate of about 50%.

Rheumatoid arthritis treatment by means of surgery is usually performed on knees, elbows, ankles, shoulders and feet. The surgery requires the cartilage to still be intact and physical therapy is required afterwards.

RA Treatment With Other Methods

There are many other therapies that an individual can employ to ease RA. Diet and exercise, for example, can essentially reverse much of the symptomatic portion of the disease. Specifically, a highly anti-inflammatory diet that avoids grains and often dairy and is high in protein and high-quality fat. This diet is popularly known as the paleo diet and has significant implications for sufferers of inflammatory diseases.

Light use of medical marijuana and alcohol have been endorsed by RA patients as ameliorative.

Exercise and a low-stress lifestyle can improve general health and immunity substantially and thus help the body help itself. However, it should be noted that too much exercise with insufficient recovery periods can actually have an inflammatory effect.

Certain supplements can be useful for RA patients. Fish oil is a highly anti-inflammatory supplement that is very safe even in large doses as it is essentially a food. Patients with active inflammatory processes often see fantastic improvement with high dose (several grams a day) of high-quality fish oil.

Further, MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin are anecdotally reputed to have joint supportive properties although the scientific literature is conflicting.

One rather fascinating supplement that this author has used for non-RA joint pain is Cissus Quadrangularis. This is a fairly new supplement on the market and studies indicate that it is rather safe. It is highly anti-inflammatory and has a powerful analgesic (pain-relieving) effect on joint pain.

Rheumatoid arthritis treatment can take many forms depending on the rheumatoid arthritis symptoms and progression of the disease but it all starts with the patient taking control of diet and exercise.

Immunomodulator - New Treatment For Arthritis

NSAIDs treat joint inflammation pain and swelling. Immunomodulators works to control immune Memory T-Cells that attack the joints and cause joint inflammation and swelling.

This new treatment for arthritis actually was discovered in 1971. Cetyl myristoleate was first discovered by a Dr. Harry W. Diehl at the National Institute of Health. But because of lack of funding it was forgotten until years later.

It was revived when Dr. Diehl himself contracted arthritis. After exhausted all avenues through conventional medicine with no true relief, to relieve himself of the pain caused by joint inflammation he injected himself with cetyl myristolate and permanently reverses his osteoarthritis condition. His doctor was so amazed at the beneficial results, he urged him to publish a report. In March of 1994, his research study about injectable cetyl myristoleate was published in The Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Today we don't need to inject cetyl meyristolate into the joints for relief, it now comes in an effective pill form and topical rub. It is marketed under the name CMO or CM Complex.

What CMO Is NOT

· CMO is not a pain reliever (only masking the pain)

· It is not a steroid

· It is not just an anti-inflammatory (however it works like one)

Once the attacks on your joints are stopped, pain and joint inflammation are promptly remedied.

"There's never been anything like it before for arthritis. Instead of treating the symptoms of pain and inflammation, CMO capsules act directly against the cause of arthritis, the memory T-cells in your immune system that create the attacks against your joints. Once the error in your immune system is corrected by CMO, the attacks on your joints stop and the pain and inflammation should be relieved forever.

Dr. Len Sands the director of the San Diego Clinic."

How Soon Can You Expect Relief?

Sometimes it takes three or more weeks before you feel much relief, sometimes it happens overnight.

In a few cases, discomfort was reduced only by only 70% to 90%. For acute arthritis suffers, 70% relief is huge. Even 70% relief allows them to function near normal again.

How Long Should You Take It?

"Unlike everything else made for arthritis, you don't have to take in over and over again. CMO is not a pain reliever, anti-inflammatory, cortisone or other steroid. CMO is an immunomodulator, it regulates your immune system."

Dr. Len Sands the director of the San Diego Clinic

One month may be long enough for treatment. Research shows in less sever cases, a couple of weeks of taking CMO is enough; for others it might take three or more months. However, unlike NSAIDs, there are no know side effects. You may take it for the rest of your life if you want/need to. CMO treatment of arthritis solve the stomach bleeding, cardiovascular problems and gastrointestinal perforations.

· Keep taking it until you feel a level of joint pain relief that is satisfactory for you. Your arthritis may never be completely gone, but it can be halted.

· Start taking it again when symptoms reappear. Be sure to check with your doctor, but there's little evidence of danger with this new treatment for arthritis.

How bad do you hurt?

Is it Expensive?

That depends on what you call expensive?

In terms of conventional treatment for arthritis, this cost for treating arthritis is very modest. $39.00 to $75.00. How much are you spending on pain, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressants, creams, rubs and co-pays already? Are they really working to reduce the cause of joint inflammation or are they only treating the symptoms and masking the pain?

Since you usually need to take only a few months of CMO capsules, it actually saves thousands of treatment dollars in the long run.

P.S. Make sure your CMO is of good quality and comes from a reputable company. There are no quality assurance regulations in place in the US right now. Look for a company who manufactures to pharmaceutical standards.

If you have arthritis, two published studies in the Journal of Rheumatology: Regarding Cetyl Myristoleate-Celadrin April 2003, and Effect of a Cetylated Fatty Acid Topical Cream on Functional Mobility and Quality of Life of Patients with Osteoarthritis April, 2004 show the unheralded results CMO. In addition, there was a clinical trial done by an independent research group on this combination that found 96% of the trial patients found relief in 60 days of treatment.

Nikken's nutritional products are manufactured to pharmaceutical industry standards and are more correctly identified as "Nutraceuticals".

According to Dr. Ernest M. Vandeweghe, Jr., MD., Nikken is one of only five nutrition companies in America that meets or exceeds the rigid quality standards of the American Nutraceutical Association (ANA), aka American Pharmaco-Nutraceutical Association. It's estimated that there are almost 400 companies producing nutritional products.

Natural Joint Care Supplements For Arthritis

Sufferers of osteoarthritis may want to rejoice - there is more than one natural joint care supplement available which have shown some promising results for alleviating the pain from inflammation. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease which targets the cartilage between joints. Often the joints become inflamed, which causes a great deal of pain and stiffness.

There have been many recent studies which have examined a variety of natural joint care supplements and the good news is that there are several which seem to support their claims to alleviate inflammation and pain in arthritis sufferers.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin, these two substances work best when taken together; they are often packaged as capsules containing both. Green lipped mussel extract contains these naturally. They have been shown to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and stop the progression of arthritis.

How do they work? Glucosamine sulphate prevents the cartilage from further deterioration. Chondroitin works to slow deterioration, as well, and aids patients in regaining their mobility. Both of these substances are naturally occurring and do not cause any side effects. Numerous studies comparing the effects of glucosamine-chondroitin against a placebo for a period of several years resulted in the patients taking the supplements realising an end to cartilage degeneration, reduced inflammation, and pain relief.

The next supplement on the list is S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e). This natural remedy is actually a molecule which increases certain chemical reactions in the body. Because it has been shown to be effective for depression as well as easing pain and increasing mobility, it is often prescribed for patients who suffer from both osteoarthritis and depression. SAM-e is one of the most commonly recommended natural treatments for arthritis.

It works by delivering sulfur to the cartilage, which, in turn, aids in the building of collagen bonds to strengthen deteriorating joints. It also provides relief for pain and inflammation and it is believed that it boosts mood via chemical messengers in the brain. SAM-e can be used to replace non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, such as Ibuprofen.

Finally, the culinary spice turmeric has also been identified as being effective as a natural joint care supplement. This spice, which is found in curry powder, has long been used by Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medical practitioners who realised its properties for relieving both pain and inflammation.

So far, studies to support this have only been performed on animals. Although it is still unclear exactly how it works on osteoarthritis, it is thought that turmeric inhibits the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, two of the body's naturally occurring chemicals which cause inflammation of the joints. One piece of research combined turmeric with the capsaicin found in chilli peppers and it was effective in reducing inflammation in the paws of rats. A further study on the combination turmeric-capsaicin was done on post-surgery patients suffering from inflammation and the results were purported to be as good as from the drug phenylbutazone.

If you have been living with osteoarthritis and wondering if there was a natural joint care supplement which might be effective for your condition, any of these natural remedies may work at relieving your pain and inflammation.

Types of Psoriasis

Psoriasis can manifest itself in somebody in several ways. The symptoms can be many and vary from individual to individual. The different kinds of psoriasis are flexural, plaque, guttate and pustular psoriasis.

The most prevalent kind of psoriasis is "Plaque Psoriasis". 80-90% of the afflicted people are struggling with plaque psoriasis. It usually manifests itself as elevated swollen skin covered with whitish rashes. These are regarded as plaques.

"Flexural Psoriasis" grows as soft swollen skin patches mainly within the folds of your skin. It is usually within the genital area, the folds under a heavy tummy, underarms and beneath the breasts. The condition can aggravate in case of sweat and abrasion and is very vulnerable to fungal infections.

In case of "Guttate Psoriasis" numerous small red, tear shaped, flaky lesions appear on the skin. These patches are generally spread all over the body mainly the abdomen. They might as well appear on the scalp, hands and legs.

"Pustular Psoriasis" shows up as small boils with pus in them. These boils are known as pustules. The skin around and below the pustules is very delicate and reddish in appearance. Pustular Psoriasis may either be limited to the hands and feet or spread all over the body randomly in form of large patches. When limited to the hands and feet it is acknowledged as "Palmoplantar Pustulosis".

Folks may as well have problems with "Nail Psoriasis" where there is a drastic change in the appearance of the nails of both hands and feet. These modifications might be in the form of discolored nails, cracked nails, nail pitting, thickened skin beneath the nails, crumbling nails, loose nails and so forth. Onycholysis is the medical problem when the nails become loose from their base on the fingers.

Psoriasis can also cause "Psoriatic Arthritis". This condition arises because of the swelling up of the connective tissue and the joints. Although psoriatic arthritis is dominant in the joints of the fingers and toes, it could affect any joint in the body such as the hip, knee or spinal cord. Psoriatic arthritis can induce dactylitis i.e. the fingers and toes swell and become shaped such as sausages. Psoriatic arthritis can impact the spinal column and induce spondylitis. Amongst the total population suffering from psoriasis around 10-15% likewise obtain psoriatic arthritis.

Erythrodermic psoriasis causes blistered as well as swollen skin all over the body. The person afflicted may likewise have pain, severe itchiness and irritation. Erythrodermic psoriasis is generally a case of irritated plaque psoriasis. It may also take place consequently of unexpected discontinuation of therapy. This type of psoriasis could be lethal since it prevents the body from being able to preserve its temperature and attacks the ability of your skin to act as a successful barrier from infections.

There may be numerous kinds of Psoriasis. But the symptoms of every type do share a lot of similarities. Regardless of which body part it affects, psoriasis could be recognized from any other illness by these evidently recognized symptoms.

Arthritis - Cure It Now At a Cost That May Surprise You!

Arthritis is a debilitating disease that causes severe physical pain and emotional turmoil for millions of people who suffer with it.

Many do nothing about it, simply because they feel the cost of joint replacement surgery is too high.

Prices for corrective joint surgery, however has fallen dramatically in price making them more affordable than ever and surgery is available at a cost of around 70% less than surgery in the US and Europe, in India.

Joint replacement is now affordable at 75% less than in the US or UK!

A hip or knee replacement for example, would cost around 20,000 dollars in the US, but in India costs just $4,500.

While the cost may be competitive there is no difference in the quality of treatment.

Many patients from Europe and the US are now traveling to India to have joint replacement surgery done, are saving enough money to enjoy a holiday of a lifetime and still have money left over!

Before we look at the standard of care in India for joint replacement surgery, let's look at the devastating affect arthritis can have:

What is arthritis?

There are over 100 different kinds of arthritis, all of which affect one or several joints in the body.

The word arthritis comes from the Greek words, arth meaning "joint" and "inflammation".

Arthritis effectively means "inflammation of a joint", which is not strictly true of the condition as in many kinds of arthritis the joint is not actually inflamed or swollen, but the pain is still there.

The consequences of arthritis

The affects of arthritis can be devastating:

70% of patients with Arthritis show evidence of radiographic changes within only 3 years.

50% of patients with arthritis are disabled and unable to work within 10 years.

In the long term, the major consequences of Arthritis include:

Joint deformity, joint misalignment, disability, emotional trauma and even premature death.

India the leader in medical tourism

The onset of cheap mass travel has opened up India to many patients who can now travel to have their surgery done at competitive cost.

Traveling to another country for treatment is referred to as medical tourism.

This is now a multi billion pound industry worldwide and India is the world leader in medical tourism and 500,000 medical tourists traveled to India in 2005 alone.

Here's why:

Cost of Treatment

With costs far lower than in Europe and the US for operations such as joint replacement, India is of interest to anyone wanting this surgery.

Cost however is not the only consideration; patients want quality care and treatment.

Quality of facilities

The quality of Indian private hospitals is on par with any in the world, as are success rates for operations.

Quality of medical experience

Indian medical doctors and nurses are known worldwide for their expertise and professionalism, giving medical tourism in India credibility among overseas patients.

Quick Access to surgery

One of the huge advantages of medical tourism is the quick access to surgery and cutting out the emotional stress of long waiting lists.

Holiday options

A byproduct, but one that is appealing, is to relax after surgery in one of the largest, most beautiful and diverse countries in the world.

When you look at the facts:

Low cost, quality facilities, expert care and the opportunity to see a different country, it is no wonder more people are considering joint replacement in India and a wide array of other treatments.

Medical tourism is growing in popularity and if you suffer from arthritis and need joint replacement therapy, you should consider what India has to offer.

More About Juvenile Arthritis and Other Types of Inflammatory Disease

Juvenile arthritis may appear like a simple unexplainable rash, a spiking fever or a swollen knuckle but no matter what kind of arthritis-related symptoms emerge; arthritis and other types of inflammatory disease for kids can be most unwelcome, confusing and unexpected.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, JRA or simple juvenile arthritis is a type of inflammatory disease that approximately affects 50,000 children in the United States. It is a chronic disease that damages and gradually destroys the joints of the body. The damage is caused by inflammation - a normal response of the body's immune system. Since arthritis means "joint inflammation", it belongs to the family of inflammatory diseases.

Juvenile arthritis is characterized by pain, swelling and heat. Many children have some sort of arthritis. This can be short-term or long-term. Some types of arthritis can even last a lifetime. The cause of juvenile arthritis implies the loss of the white blood cells' ability to define the difference between the body's healthy cells and the disease-causing invaders like viruses as well as bacteria. The immune system, a supposed protector of the body from bad germs, releases chemicals that can also damage healthy tissues. This can cause pain and other inflammatory diseases.

Juvenile arthritis typically appears between the ages of 6 months and 16 years. The early signs are often swelling and pain in the joints or joints that are warm and somehow reddened. Elbows, knees, shoulders and hips are most likely to be affected. Children with juvenile arthritis can develop eye problems and are at a higher risk of developing adult forms of arthritis.

Frequent treatment of inflammatory diseases with anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen can have side effects. This includes pain, irritation and bleeding in the upper intestines as well as the stomach. Even the kidneys and the liver can be affected. This means, frequent screening must be done on patients undergoing treatments to avoid these side effects.

The cause of juvenile arthritis is still yet to be proven and so are ways to prevent it. However, there are care methods that can alleviate the illness and prevent complications, especially for those who have it already. It is important to take care of your child if he has or he is suspected of having juvenile arthritis. See to it that he takes the medicine prescribed to him. He should not overdo strenuous activities. It is also good to apply heat or warm compress to stiff or inflamed joints but make sure they're not so hot that that can already damage your child's skin.

Though juvenile arthritis may last for years, children with this condition have good chances of still living a normal life. They can get well without any serious, permanent disabilities. They can still keep up with school and social activities. Nevertheless, parents should be aware that this can also lead to complications and long-term consequences. While there are no simple and fast solutions to inflammatory diseases, you can still coordinate closely with your doctor or medical professionals for proper management of the disease.

Natural Remedies For Arthritis Sufferers

Until the middle of the last century, arthritis in its many different guises was treated with a variety of homemade or natural remedies. Some were good and some were not so good. But now with the high cost of medicines and the potential negative side effects of some drugs, natural arthritis remedies are making a come back.

What Causes Arthritis?

Arthritis is a disease that causes moderate to severe pain and minor to almost complete loss of movement to joints. It can be caused by hereditary factors, brittle cartilage brought on by aging, joint injury due to repetitive stress from working, playing intensive sports or from damage due to a past infection or accident.

Once you have arthritis there is no cure but there are measures you can take to lessen the severity of the pain and loss of movement.

Natural Arthritis Remedies That Work

With at least 100 different kinds of arthritis disease, it stands to reason that not every natural remedy will work for everybody. However, there are some remedies that keep making the top list of things that work. Try them and see what works best for you.

One is raisins and gin. Yes, I know what you're thinking, toss out the raisins and just keep the gin. Cheek! But in actuality, many people have had good results from eating a few gin-soaked raisins everyday.

Here's how it works...you place 9 golden raisins (not the regular kind) in a glass and cover with any type of gin. Let soak for 3 days and then eat the raisins. Why 9 and not 5 or 10? No one is quite sure, but many old wives swear by this tale of raisins and gin as a pain reliever.

Another is ginger. Ginger has been used for centuries to ease the painful effects of arthritis. But now some researchers have found that ginger can relieve pain, reduce swelling and improve joint movement.

The quickest way to get this all important spice plant into your body is to make a cup of tea. Freeze some fresh ginger root and grate it into some hot water. Let steep for several minutes and then drink. Ginger has long been used to relieve nausea and ease inflammation.

Other Arthritis herbs found to be of use are Black Cohosh, Angelica and Feverfew. Black Cohosh is a Native American Indian therapy for arthritis. A heaped teaspoon of this plant can be simmered in a cup of hot water and then drank as a tonic and is believed to be a great anti-inflammatory. You can also purchase this as premade teabags or in capsule form. Angelica has been used in Europe since antiquity as an anti-inflammatory treatment for arthritis. Feverfew in some studies has been proven to have anti-inflammatory effects greater than standard arthritis drugs like NSAIDs.

Why not try tart cherries? Researchers have discovered that eating a few fresh tart cherries every day can greatly aid in the battle against arthritis pain. You can also drink the juice or by a capsule with the dried cherries to take if you are unable to get the fresh. Tart cherries have more antioxidants than vitamin C! Now that you know a few inexpensive but effective natural arthritis remedies, you can try out a few on your own and see if they can work for you, too.
